Multi-Cultural Services
What does it mean to be multiracial or multicultural? Multiracial is when a person self identifies or is genetically more than one race or ethnicity. Multiculturalism is when a person adopts more than one culture as their primary cultures and identities. Being a person who identifies as a multiracial and/or multicultural comes with some unique complexities. At a young age multiracial people often attach to the racial culture that is most dominant in the household. As one grows, they can start to move through the multi identity phases and become curious about the other other parts of themself.
Why does multicultural and/or multiracial informed therapists matter?
As a therapist it is important to understand how various parts and characteristics of a client’s racial and cultural identity impact and influence their mental health. People typically approach healing from their cultural lens which emphasizes the importance of a multicultural informed therapist. The key aspects of multicultural counseling include:
- Cultural awareness- knowledge of other cultures and how they impact the healing journey.
- Cultural sensitivity- awareness, understanding and openness to other cultures
- Cultural empathy- honor and respect of the differences in each culture
